The Heights Neighborhood Sign

Houston Heights Neighborhood Sign

“The Heights”

” is a unique Houston neighborhood built in the 1910’s to 1930’s. It is now an eclectic area of distinguished restored homes, homes needing updating, period-look new construction, and unique shopping areas.

The close-in location and historical nature has driven the price steadily upward. The demand for the updated older home and for new construction that keeps the old neighborhood feel keeps increasing

The unifying feature of the neighborhood is the front porch.  From the Craftsman style bungalow (my house) to the ornate 2 story Victorians and Greek Revival homes; the shared feature is the front porch.

The original idea of the porch was to merge the indoors with the outdoors. More critical in the pre-air conditioned days when they provided shade and open breezy gathering areas. It is these shaded porches that today still unify the neighborhood. Yards may be shrinking, but people still cling to their porches.

Although lumped together as the Heights, the area is made up of a number of subdivisions. Some of these have been designated historic neighborhoods

The flavor of each area varies, as does it’s price range and deed restrictions.

See posts on these areas and others, covering unique features, house styles, prices, new construction, more.

The Heights is a wonderful, historic neighborhood. Inviting front porches are still the norm, which helps us know our neighbors and keeps the old neighborhood feel.

Location: a desirable area close to Downtown, the Medical Center and the Galleria. Located in the NW corner of Houston’s 610 North Loop.  (Generally bounded north & south by I-10 & 610 N Loop; and east and west by I-45 and N shepherd).
