Heights Home with Pool: 440 W 27th St

Filed in Houston Heights Homes for Sale by on September 13, 2019

Recently Built Heights Home With Pool

Homes with pools are not rare in the Heights, but they are not common either. What is difficult to find however is a recently built home on a double lot for under a million dollars. Typically Heights builders maximize profits by building very large homes on their double lots. This makes sense for the builder, but not many buyers can afford $1M -$2M homes.

What makes 440 W 27th St so unique is that it hits the sweet spot of SF, lot size and price. This home is recent construction (built in 2012 by Heights builder Ostlind Thomas), perfect size (2188 SF), on a double lot (6550 SF), a large pool (not a cocktail pool), a huge L-shaped porch, and is priced at $795 K. (Now $770K).  A great house with pool and plenty of yard left over.

10/25/19 Note: Price Change on 440 W 27th: It was $795K, now $770K.

Most homes similar in size would be renovated bungalows, or more recent homes on narrow lots with a pool crammed in, leaving no yard.

There are actually quite a few homes with pools currently available in the Heights, but most are very large ( 3500 SF or larger) and very expensive (between $1M – $2.5M). This attached Pdf of Big Heights Homes with Pools shows availability as of 9/11/19.

440 W 27th St, Houston Heights 77008

The story of this home is unique. The current owner bought 440 W 27th St new in 2012. It was built on a single 25 ft wide lot, as are most new homes. The builder was Ostlind Thomas, a great Heights  Builder known for quality features and attention to detail. The house next door was old and dilapidated.

When this neighboring house eventually came up for sale, the owner snapped it up in order to have a larger yard. He later removed the structure and proceeded to add a huge covered porch and his dream pool. Thus it came to be the rare, affordable home with pool on a big lot.

The tall ceilings and shining oak floors give a spacious feel to the home. The added glass doors opening to expansive covered porch let in a lot of light. This porch is truly an extension of the living space.

The master suite is in front of the house, overlooking tree-lined street. The other two bedroom are at other end of house. They share a Hollywood bath.

This home has too many features to list so click this link for the complete HAR MLS listing.

I will mention a couple of additions to this house would be the envy of most Heights owners:

  • The alley is paved. Alleys are owned by the City, but not maintained. The surrounding neighbors banded together to have this alley paved.
  • There is parking in front of the house as well as in back.
  • The garage is finished and cabinets were added for storage. It even has a decked attic with pull-down stairs for additional storage
