Houston Heights Home For Sale -1229 Columbia St
This Houston Heights Home For Sale is a Craftsman Style Bungalow Priced at $544,900
The Craftsman bungalow is the most common house style here in Houston Heights and Woodland Heights. These are known for their low-pitched, gabled roof with exposed rafters, wide eaves over large porches, square columns supporting the overhangs and wood or brick supports for the columns. It’s motto is simplicity of style and carpentry. (Well, maybe not for the huge Green & Greene Craftsman homes of Southern California, the land of excess, but definitely for most of the country). This style came about ca 1900 as a backlash against the overly ornate Victorian homes.
This Houston heights home for sale, in the heart of the Heights, personifies this motto. It was originally built in 1915, as a 2 Bedroom/1Bath home. The current owner added a master suite, opened and expanded the kitchen to add a family room. He kept the single story style instead of adding a second floor. The goal was to keep the character and style of the original house, but add more space and modern conveniences. The owner belives it may be a Sears Roebuck catalog home. (I will write a future post about this.)
Description: The owner has carefully and considerately renovated and expanded this home. It is approximately 2100 SF on a 6600SF lot, in the East Houston Heights Historic District.
Well known Heights craftsman, Steve Ista did most of additions to the master suite and the family area.
This house is a delight with its large living room with diamond lite windows, brick fireplace, tall ceilings and red pine floors.
There is also a separate family room, which opens to the kitchen with a vaulted ceiling. Lots of windows and French doors open to private courtyards and a huge back yard.
The split plan puts the master in the back of the house away from the other 2 bedrooms. A key feature of the home is the huge, landscaped yard with Koi pond and secluded patios off the family room and one bedroom.
I have included a few photos, but see the YouTube video for many more.
